Pond Algae

The Fight Against String Algae in the Pond

Every time you see a green, slimy formation of some sort in your pond, then you might be seeing algae. They come in different forms depending on the type. Every water system that has life in it is ought to have algae one way or another. Although each algae type may seem different in form and way of growth, they are actually related and can be dealt with in one treatment if carefully analyzed. One perfect example would be the string algae. Others may call them filamentous algae and some refer tot hem as blanket weed. String algae grow in hair-like forms and sometimes come in bunches. Another type of algae is the suspended algae which causes the water to discolor and become green. Some pond parasites that fall into this category are plankton, pea soup and single-celled algae. It is easy to identify the type of algae that you have in your pond just as long as you know that effects each type has to the water and to the whole pond itself.

Keep in mind that string type algae are treated; most of the time is the same ways. And the suspended type of algae is treated differently. String algae in particular are should be carefully analyzed and observed if they are really present in the pond then that’s the time you can take action.

It is no difficult to know that you have string algae in your pond since they come in a very obvious form. They usually hang on plants and walls in the pond. Their favorite hangouts are rocks, water falls, water cascades and pond equipments like filters and pumps. This type of algae is a surface lover. So don’t get too surprised once you witness them floating on the surface of the pond or tangling up on ornamental water plants.

For you to be able to effectively control the excessive growth of string algae, you should know how they enter in the first place. Once you introduce a new plant into the pond, remember that string algae mostly tangle up on plants. Therefore it is important that you apply the necessary cleaning the new plants need before they can actually be a part of your water garden.

If you are aiming for a totally string algae-free pond, then it is recommended that you by hand should remove all the green hair-like algae that are hanging, tangling and floating in the pond. It is definitely not the easiest but it’s the safest method since there are no chemicals involved.

The use of pond algae treatments is also a good option. However careful selection is needed since some pond treatments have effects in the fish, plants and even in other types of algae. Algaecides are the most effective when it comes to total abolition of algae in the pond. But these chemicals are no doubt harmful to the fish, plants and other pond creatures. Be sure that when you use pond algae treatments or algaecides, the remains of the affected algae must be immediately removed or else they will cause the balance of the eco-system in the pond to tilt.
